The Reason Behind The Toolkit
I, (Patty Burgess) was introduced to death and loss by my dear friend, Rona. This picture was taken 3 months before she died. She was 45 years old, a mom to 3 young boys, and a fitness buff. Nothing about her death made sense. As I struggled to find ways to support her, it was hospice that helped me, help Rona - face the end of her life.
Little did I know at that time that I was doing doula work. We didn’t call it that back then. I was just…”being with” my friend.
I had no idea that years later I would train over 25,000 hospice volunteers, staff, end-of-life doulas, and students, be a founding and charter member of both NEDA (National End-of-Life Doula Alliance), and the NHPCO End-of-Life Doula Council (National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization). And last year one side of my business was acquired by a large healthcare training and data analytics company.
All this because I followed a passion step-by-step, and kept the vision alive, though it changed MANY times throughout the years.
However, I soon realized that there were unique challenges and needs faced by doulas like myself if we wanted to make a living doing this beautiful work.
Marketing, attracting clients, and service delivery became hurdles that stood in the way of fully embracing my purpose. It was disheartening to witness the gap between the profound services I could provide as a doula, and the complexities we face in reaching those who needed our support the most.
Driven by a passion to bridge this gap, I embarked on a mission to create comprehensive training solutions for certification and end-of-life doula business support.
Wanting to make this available and affordable, the best option was to create an easy to digest solution that could have a BIG return if implemented.
This toolkit is for any one who identifies as a doula, or wants to be, whether they are “certified” or not, just starting out or have been in business for a while.

Patty is a renowned national trainer, speaker, and educator on end-of-life care, having trained over 25,000 individuals including hospice volunteers, staff, and end-of-life doulas.
Her journey began when she spent everyday from diagnosis to death with her dear friend who introduced her to hospice care. This led her to become a fervent advocate, volunteer and hospice community educator in Atlanta and Philadelphia.
She founded Teaching Transitions, which has been rebranded as LifePath Learners under her leadership, aiming to enhance end-of-life awareness through training, coaching, and mentorship. As a founding member of the National End-of-Life Doula Alliance (NEDA) and a charter member of the NHPCO's End-of-Life Doula Council, Patty's work is nationally recognized.
Her mission is to transform the end-of-life experience from one of ONLY sadness, overwhelm and fear to that of peace, meaning, and connection, and a little bit of awe.
